West Madison to host Camp Invention

MADISON – Camp Invention will return to West Madison Elementary School this summer with high-throttle days of creative thinking for youngsters.

Wendy Tibbs, enrichment specialist at West Madison, will direct the camp on June 24-28 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

“Camp Invention inspires inventive thinking during a weeklong adventure of fun and exciting real-world challenges led by qualified educators,” Tibbs said.

Youngsters entering grades 1-6 can attend. Camp Invention presents mental exercises with hands-on involvement and problem solving.

The 2013 program, Geo-Quest, features the Cache Dash, an international expedition for the children to navigate their way to treasure-filled caches from youth around the world, Tibbs said.

With Ecoverse, students will explore the sky, sea, land and underground and invent tools to reveal hidden messages. “In Amazing Atlas Games, students will play their way through a global expedition and explore extremes of the natural world: heat, height, crystals, water and cold,” Tibbs said.

The “I Can Invent: Launchitude” session puts physics to use. “The children will take apart machines and re-engineer the pieces to create a ‘Duck Chucking Device’ to destroy competitor duck territory,” Tibbs said.

West Madison parent Kathryn Harbour said both of her sons will enroll at Camp Invention. “We are really excited about it,” she said. “I’m looking forward to having them in a week-long camp.”
