Madison Board of Education approves rezoning plan

Madison City Schools

MADISON – What a difference a couple of weeks can make.

On March 21, scores of parents objected to rezoning lines for Madison elementary schools during a lengthy public form. Yet only one parent spoke at the Madison Board of Education meeting on April 4.

The board approved the rezoning plan, targeted to relieve overcrowding at Columbia and Mill Creek elementary schools.

Principal Dr. Brian Clayton recognized James Clemens High School basketball players as Division 3 state champions. These special education students and coach Shannon Humphrey had a 14-1 season.

Artwork by Paige Koesters of Bob Jones High School will appear on promotional materials for the Women’s Guild spring gala at Huntsville Museum of Art. Koesters painted purple tulips drenched in raindrops.

Kristy Wheeler, family and consumer science teacher at Bob Jones, introduced Victoria Moorehead, Jasmine Duncan, Sydney Taylor and Tyler Nesselrotte as top-place winners at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) state convention.

Marty Tatara, director of nutrition services, succeeded in certification for the “Sixth Cent For Child” program. The district will receive about $50,000 more annually to reduce school meal prices.

The instructional committee has been reviewing middle school curriculum. “We want to increase ‘rigor’ for all students. We will offer honor classes in middle school with additional assignment and assessment rigor,” director of instruction Dr. Camille Wright said.

The committee is in the planning stage for alternative schedules to allow time for “gifted enrichment, targeted intervention and enrichment opportunities,” Wright said.

Director of Student Services Dennis James met with Madison police officers and firefighters about “emergency tabletop exercises,” or response plans to school crises. Special Resource Officers (SRO) in Madison schools will complete unannounced shutdown drills.

Bob Jones has had a ‘surprise’ drill. “We found some areas that aren’t as strong as we want to be. We will work on those,” principal Robby Parker said.

In business action, the board approved a $45,000 loan for Bob Jones band uniforms to be repaid in $9,000 increments in five years.
