“It is time to register for the Queen’s Quest tournament now,” parent volunteer Ranae Bartlett said. “This tournament is open to any student in grades K-12 from public, private or home school.”

United States Chess Federation (USCF) membership is required. “This is a great first tournament to participate in if your child is interested in seeing what tournament play is like,” Bartlett said.

The tournament configuration uses 5 Round Swiss. The four sections of players are divided by grade, including primary (grades K-3), elementary (K-6), junior high (K-9) and open (K-12). Trophies and medals will be awarded for these individual sections.

Organizers encourage players to play in the lowest section for which they are eligible. However, players may choose a higher section. Tournament officials may merge sections at the director’s discretion, but a merge will not affect prize eligibility.

Rounds of play will be held at 10:15 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The tournament director may decide to hold the final two rounds earlier. Time control for a game is 30 minutes with a five-second delay.

“This is an individual event with secondary team prizes. A team includes the four highest scorers,” Bartlett said. “Teams may represent a school. Pairings will be ‘team blind.'”?

Advanced entries must be received by Nov. 19 with USCF identification number and expiration date, BYE requests and check payable to Rainbow elementary. Entry fee is $20 if received by Nov. 19 or $30 afterwards. Mail to Ranae Bartlett, Rainbow Elementary, 50 Nance Road, Madison, AL 35758.

On-site registration will open from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Pizza, soft drinks and other concessions will be sold.

Team trophies also will be awarded to the top teams based on the top 4 individual scores on any team. For registration information, visit images.pcmac.org/SiSFiles/Schools/AL/MadisonCity/RainbowElem/Uploads/Forms/2013%20Fall%20Queens%20Quest%20Flyer.pdf.
