HUNTSVILLE – Puppets, princesses and zombies will be part of summer classes at Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater & Academy.

“We will feature our interactive parent-toddler class, ‘Music ‘n Motion,’ in addition to classes in drama, musical theater singing and dance, playwriting, sewing and improv,” academy director Karen Alexander said.

“We’ll offer more than 30 classes. Children can take several different types of performing arts classes and gain experience in areas of interest,” Alexander said.

For “Super Heroes Arise!,” children can act out famous hero roles and make their own super hero costumes in an action-packed drama class on June 9-13. Seven- and eighth-year-olds can attend.

For five- and six-year-olds on July 7-11, “‘P is for Princess (Purple, Pink and Pretending)’ will involve pretend balls, magical gardens, pretty dresses and grand entrances — not to mention some girlie-girl crafts,” executive director Karen Ouriel said.

Young teens can create a character for an original play during “Zombie Apocalypse — They’re Here” on July 7-11. Participants will learn about basic acting, writing and special effects makeup. The session is open to 12- through 16-year-olds.

In “Stage Makeup” class, students will learn to prepare old-age and character faces, black eyes and scars. “They may never have to buy Halloween masks again once they learn the secrets of character and animal makeup,” Ouriel said.

“Stage Makeup” is open in day classes on July 7 -11 to ages 12-18 and to 16-year-olds to adults in evening classes.

“Puppets come alive in ‘Puppet Mania’ with history, theater games and creativity,” Ouriel said. Children will build two puppets and perform a show. Dates are July 7-11 for seven- to 10-year-olds.

A new workshop, “Shakespeare Project” for ages 11-18 will offer storytelling and improvisation, classical form, rhythm, history, creative writing and stage combat. Susan Guthrie will guide students in better understanding of the bard. Dates are July 21-25.

Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater and Academy is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization.
