MADISON – The Winter Guard at Bob Jones High School competed in the Pell City Winter Premiere with a show that explored ways to ‘control’ time.

Held at Pell City High School on Feb. 14, the event attracted 33 winter guards with about 400 students.

The Bob Jones group compiled the highest score of the day for all scholastic guards. Their score of 67.85 was approximately 12 points more than their score at the last competition and several points higher than the guard in second place.

Guard members are Mary Allen, Katie Bohatch, Lindsey Booth, Lauren Davidson, Haley Delmas, Breanna Ferguson, Hannah Gulley, Crystal Hoskins, Liz Mora, Olivia Schweikart, Shelby Travis, April Turner and Natalie Williams.

Brooke Howe and John Howe direct the Winter Guard with assistance from Niki Adcox and Leigh Thomas.

“Prior to competing at Pell City, the guard had been promoted one class above where they started at the beginning of the season,” Thomas said. “They are now competing in Scholastic AA, the second highest winter guard class in the Southeastern Color Guard Circuit (SCGC) circuit.”

The 2015 show, “Playing with Time,” uses a compilation of several tunes for its music. “The show displays many ways that time can be altered — backwards, forwards, faster, slower and so forth. It requires complex counting strategies by the performers when the music is altered in these ways,” Thomas said.

In the show, the guard uses an hourglass as a prop to ‘control’ time. “For example, at the end of the show, the hourglass is turned upside down and the music then plays in reverse,” Thomas said.

Also on their 2015 schedule, the Bob Jones Winter Guard will compete at Hoover High School on Feb. 28, East Hamilton High School on March 21 and at SCGC Championships on March 28.
