Sci-Quest readies for spring break with camps

HUNTSVILLE – With a dreary winter hopefully ending, Sci-Quest Hands-On Science Center is launching the new season with 2015 Spring Break Camps.

The Sci-Quest camps on March 23-27 coincide with Spring Break for Huntsville City Schools, Madison City Schools and Madison County Schools.

Camp sessions are split between a morning and afternoon schedule.

Kindergartners through second-graders can sign up for “In the Dark” to learn about nocturnal animals and life after sundown. “‘Liquid Laboratory’ overflows with fun as you make volcanoes that explode and pennies that float,” Sci-Quest Development and Marketing Director Jennifer Deermer said.

During “When Pigs Fly,” youngsters will design, build and test catapults of all sizes. “On the Farm” will discuss how cows produce milk and bees make honey. “Campers even can meet some live chickens,” Deermer said. Among other sessions are “Just Dough It,” “I Spy,” “Let’s Go Fly a Kite,” and “Robo Picasso” to build mini-robots.

Youngsters in grades 3-5 can enroll in “Cookie Wars” for a culinary competition for the perfect cookie formula. During “Around the World with Science,” campers will survey work of international scientists.

Promising to be loads of fun, “Duct Tape Mania” will introduce “the science of being sticky,” Deermer said. “Campers will make some cool creations with everyone’s favorite adhesive and (learn) where it got its name.” “Military Science” will offer an overview of men and women in uniform and military technology.

“Know Your Genes” will explore DNA and the mystery of genetics.

Third- through fifth-graders also can pursue “Use Your Noodle” to experiment — and eat — pasta. “Retro Tech” will roll back the clock to the 1980s to see a Walkman, laser disk and punch card from their parents’ techno-edge.

“LED Art” is a STEAM-inspired (Science, Technology, Engineering, The Arts and Mathematics) program. “Raceways” (at $25) and “Dissection Discoveries” also are options.

Cost is $20 per camp session. Sci-Quest members will receive a 10-percent discount.
