Football fortifies Mason Edwards mentally, physically

HARVEST – Mason Edwards has been one of Sparkman High School’s standouts on the football field when the Senators’ went to battle in gridiron contests.

A senior, Edwards has played the positions of quarterback, wide receiver and running back for the Senators.

Why is football the favorite sport for Edwards? “Reasoning … it’s 90 percent mental,” he said. “It takes an extreme amount of mental and physical toughness. It teaches you things you can’t learn in a classroom.”

His mother, Melissa Edwards, works as a registered nurse at Huntsville Hospital. Mason has four brothers.

Devin Edwards is a sophomore at the University of Alabama. Mason’s brother Isaac Edwards is a sophomore at Sparkman. Jacob Edwards is in sixth grade at Sparkman Middle School. Mason’s youngest brother is Rylan Edwards, a third-grader at Harvest Elementary School.

Q: When you go out to eat, which restaurant is in one of your favorites?

A: Beauregard’s is always on the top of the list for Mason.

Q: What’s your favorite food?

A: Hot wings.

Q: What are your favorite sports teams?

A: In the ranks of college football, Mason will always be a fan of Crimson Tide football at the University of Alabama. In the National Football League, the Carolina Panthers is the team that Mason will support.

Q: What’s your favorite sports memory?

A: Mason best remembers “the homecoming game of my senior year. It was the first time that Sparkman had won a homecoming game in the past decade,” he said.

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?

A: Away from school and work, Mason chooses to take time to “talk to family, play basketball and football … and eat.”
