MADISON – Madison Police Department currently is investigating two vehicle thefts and two attempted vehicle thefts from parking lots of local businesses. These incidents occurred between May 22 and May 27.

Victims have reported to Madison police that the thefts occurred when they left their vehicle motors running, left keys in the ignition, were pumping gas or otherwise engaged. While the victims are distracted, the offender has entered the vehicle and driven off or attempted to drive off.

Madison police have recovered one of the stolen vehicles. Officers continue to search for a blue 2002 Dodge Dakota with a camper shell, bearing Alabama tag 9686AC2. This vehicle was stolen from Kroger on Hughes Road on May 27.

The offender is described a black male in his early 20s; five feet, eight inches to five feet, 10 inches tall; and weighing approximately 170 pounds. He has short hair and has been wearing light colored shorts, a collared shirt and white canvas shoes.

Madison police request that anyone with information to call the department at 256-772-5689, call Madison Police Dispatch at 256-722-7190 or email tellmpd@madisonal.gov.

* Be aware of your surroundings while pumping gas, using ATMs and browsing at DVD rental machines.
* If practical, turn off your vehicle and remove the keys when exiting the vehicle.
* When exiting your vehicle, take your cell phone.
* If you see a stranger approaching you while you are stopped in your vehicle, remain in the vehicle and lock your doors.
• If your vehicle is stolen or someone attempts to steal it in your presence, remain calm. Do not try to chase the suspect or your vehicle on foot. Call 911 immediately.
