Frigid weather impacts North Alabama blood supply

MADISON – Winter storm conditions across most of North Alabama have reduced local supplies of blood, and LifeSouth Community Blood Center in Madison urges residents to help by donating blood.

“This time of year is always slow for blood collections, and the severe winter weather brought even more obstacles for blood donors and the local blood supply,” Eric Franchois, District Community Development Coordinator, said.

LifeSouth canceled blood drives on Jan. 12 and 13, and the Madison area faced even worse driving conditions and single-digit temperatures on Jan. 16-17. Donations have significantly decreased causing blood shortages.

Donors must be at least 17 years old. However, 16-year-olds who have parental permission also can donate, if teenager weighs at least 110 pounds and is in good health. A photo I.D. also is required.

“Weather continues to be an obstacle for us, and we are still in emergency need for most blood types,” Franchois said. “The need is constant.”
