Summer fun events to fill week with plenty of fun

Here are some of the summer fun, family-friendly events happening this week in and around the Madison area.

Space Craze: A Space-Age Journey through Pop Culture

Space Craze explores the public fascination with all things space through the lens of popular culture  as seen in everyday household items, toys and games, and popular entertainment. This nostalgic exhibit features touchstones across generations of artifacts from G.I. Joe to Snoopy to commemorative memorabilia. The exhibit is part of the yearlong celebration of the 50th Anniversary Apollo 11 mission to the moon.

This exciting presentation is built in real-time and is based on audience questions submitted prior to and during the event. Each month will feature a specific astronomical topic. The Planetarium Director will be joined by a panel of engineers who worked on the Apollo 11 mission. This event will be driven by audience interaction, so bring your questions about what it was like to work on this history-making project!

In the summer of 1875, Mary Todd Lincoln resides in an insane asylum, sent there by her only living son. At this point in her life, Mary has lost three sons and her beloved husband, President Lincoln. Her progressive friend Myra Bradwell (America’s first woman Lawyer) arrives to help Mary gain her release by exposing the injustices of her trial. But Myra’s motives and Mary’s sanity are both up for debate, as they grapple with their pasts and their perception of freedom and womanhood.

This free celebration takes place on the banks of the Tennessee River with live music featuring The Beasley Brothers at 6 pm and Juice at 7:30 pm. Vendors will sell food and beer.  The Huntsville/Madison County Bicentennial Committee will sponsor a fireworks show at 9:30 pm.

Heritage Church is sponsoring the free concert series on Sundays during June at 6:30 p.m. in Heritage Park, adjacent to the church at 29768 Huntsville Brownsferry Road. This location is about one-quarter mile west of Walgreen’s on County Line Road. Food trucks will sell their unique recipes for savory and sweet choices. To-date, Bad News BBQ, Fire & Spice, Highway Kabobery, I Love Bacon and Sweet Temptations plan to attend.

Cineplanet 15 Summer Movies

Starting in June, Cineplanet 15 in Madison will show a G or PG rated movie every Tuesday and Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. for $1 per seat. A $3 kid-size popcorn and drink combo will also be offered.

Enjoy activities, face painting, music and food vendors throughout the afternoon and evening. A fireworks display will close the festivities around 9 p.m. Parking for the event will be at Bob Jones High School with shuttle services provided by the City of Madison. Shuttle services will begin running at 1:45 p.m. with the last pick up at 8:45 p.m. Following the event, the shuttles will take you back to Bob Jones High School. Handicap parking ONLY will be allowed at Dublin Park.

 

July 4th Celebration at U.S. Space & Rocket Center

Enjoy special, family-friendly patriotic activities during regular museum hours, 9 am to 5 pm. The Rocket Center will close at 5 pm, and there are no evening activities inside the park on July 4. Instead, the Center will launch its largest fireworks display ever at 9 pm. For the safety of guests, the large fireworks display requires the closing of the parking lot in front of the Davidson Center for Space Exploration, and very limited parking is available in the main lot. Visitors are encouraged to view the breathtaking, patriotic show from other areas in the vicinity of the Rocket Center.
