Madison Police Hosting Cornhole Tournament
MADISON- The first of what’s expected to be annual gathering is set for Saturday, Nov. 23 as the Madison Police Foundation is hosting its first Cornhole Tournament at the Insanity Skate Park in Madison.
The team event includes a $600 first place prize and a $400 second place award. The tournament begins at 10:00 a.m.
“We were at our Resource Officer Association National Conference and looking ways to increase our funds and we heard of others holding just such a tournament,” said Al Bryan, Resource Officer for the Madison Police Dept. “We figured it would be a great idea and now look at our community help us help them.”
The cornhole courts will be of regulation up-to-code equipment with one division of all play with a double elimination team format utilizing a loser’s bracket on the way to a tournament champion. Local businesses have donated door prizes, which will be given away throughout the competition.
“The best thing about playing cornhole is you’re playing directly with an opponent and there’s no way a participant can override the rules in his or her favor,” said Bryan. “Once registered, each participant will receive a tournament T-shirt and two drink tickets.”
Cornhole is made up of two playing courts and 16 oz. bags filled with corn kernels of similar materials. Each participant will toss bags toward the raised platform in what are termed innings or frames. The first competitor to reach the score level of 21 is determined the winners. The competition will be governed by the American Cornhole Association and its rules.
The expected day-long event will include a cash bar and food trucks and there is no admission charged for others wanting to just few the action.
“The money raised will go towards our programs here in the Madison community and try and offset the funds set aside by the City of Madison,” added Bryan.
