Madison residents wake up to winter wonderland

MADISON – Madison residents woke up to a winter wonderland Monday morning. The heavy snow came after record high temps and storms moved through the area over the weekend.

The US National Weather Service in Huntsville is reporting some power outages and wide-spread hazardous travel conditions will linger through mid-morning. Please avoid getting on any snow covered/icy roads until conditions improve.

Around 6 a.m., the Madison Police Department a advised motorists to avoid the area of I-565 eastbound, just east of the Wall Triana exit, for the next few hours due to an 18-wheeler that is blocking the roadway. Other reports of hazardous road conditions this morning have been coming in throughout the area.

Several businesses and local government services are delaying their opening this morning. Redstone Arsenal stated last night they will delay opening until 10 a.m. Gate 9 will remain open 24/7. Gates 1,3,7 and 8 will open no later than 9:30 a.m. The City of Madison facilities are also on a two-hour delay this morning.

Teachers with Madison City Schools were expected to have a workday today in preparation of students returning to school on Tuesday. According to MCS Director of Communications John Peck, the school district is cancelling the professional development activities for all faculty and staff. Employees will report tomorrow when students are scheduled to return to school from the winter break.
