Athens Utilities hope to have the last 400 homes without power back on tonight

MADISON – It has been a long wait for power to come back on in a few subdivisions along County Line Road today. According to Arab Utilities, the wait could be almost over.

About 3,500 Athens Utilities customers were without power early Monday. By 5 p.m., AU Electric Department Manager Blair Davis said crews had switched as many customers as possible to other power sources and crews were hooking up a mobile transformer to help serve about 1,900 without power in the Greenbrier area.

Tonight, about 400 homes still wait for power. “About 30 linemen are working this evening to connect subdivisions experiencing outages,” Davis said. “Crews continue to get power restored in stages, as crews must go to each subdivision to make the connection.”

He said the goal still is to restore power today, however, customers may want to seek options for alternate heating and/or housing as work is going into the evening hours. “Those who are without power can unplug appliances and turn lights to the off position to help the stability of the temporary power system as subdivision power loads are added to the system,” Davis added

According to the City of Madison Communications Specialist Samantha Magnuson, the Dublin Park facility on Old Madison Pike will be open until 8 p.m. to the public who need to charge phones and other devices if they have lost power. She stressed that Dublin Park is not operating as a warming center.
