No. 11 UAH extends win streak to 11 in doubleheader sweep at Montevallo

MONTEVALLO – The No. 11 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team extended its winning streak to 11 consecutive games with a doubleheader sweep at Montevallo by scores of 9-1 in six innings and 13-5 on Saturday afternoon to begin a three-game Gulf South Conference series. UAH improves to 16-3 (5-0 GSC), while UM slides to 6-10 (0-2 GSC).

The Chargers and Falcons finish off the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

UAH 9, UM 1 (Six innings)
The Chargers scored two or more runs in three innings to lead UAH to a 9-1 win to open the series at the Falcons, as Megan Shurtz also backed the offense with 6.0 innings and one run allowed.

Shurtz additionally issued zero walks while striking out six to improve to 4-1 this season.

UAH recorded 10 base hits in the series-opener, led by Lawren Hayes who went 3-for-4 out of the leadoff spot with one run scored. Lila Young also had a multi-hit game with a 2-for-3 performance.

Alexa Douthitt and Kaylee Vaught each registered a team-high two RBI against Montevallo, as both also notched one hit and one run in the contest.

UAH 13, UM 5
The Chargers powered their way to a doubleheader sweep with a 13-5 game two win that featured three rallies of three runs or more, 14 base hits and four extra-base hits.

Maddie Cartron collected a team-high three base hits and three runs scored to go along with two RBI. Cartron is now tied for the lead in the GSC with 25 RBI in 2023.

Douthitt went 2-for-3 in game two with both of her hits going for extra bases, including a two-run home run in the top of the first. Douthitt also hit a double in the contest.

Lawren Hayes, Kaylee Vaught and Jessica Edde each finished with two base hits in the contest to give the Chargers five players with multi-hit performances.

Jada Henderson hit her third home run of the season with a three-run shot in the top of the sixth.

Josie Thompson earned the win in relief to improve to 1-1 this season, after hurling 6.2 innings with one run allowed and to strikeouts.
