Civic groups, city succeed in Christmas events

MADISON – Community spirit elevated during the Christmas season to deliver several events and displays that heightened good will for Madison residents.

“What an outstanding 2024 Madison Polar Express Christmas Tree Trail we had this year!” event chair Debbie Overcash said. “Thanks to (all the participants), a record-breaking 80 beautiful trees were decorated and lit up our sweet Main Street throughout the holiday season.”

“We’ve gotten rave reviews that the trees are the most beautiful and creative ever for the tree trail,” Overcash said. Madison Station Historical Preservation Society, along with Overcash as its president, was instrumental in the planning and set up for the tree trail.

The official lighting of Christmas trees was held on Dec. 6, and the trees’ illuminations were ‘on’ at nighttime through New Year’s Eve. On Jan. 2, Madison Parks and Recreation Department removed, recycled and mulched all trees on the trail.

Award winners for excellence in decoration of the Christmas trees were Mr. Weeds Gardening, recipient of the Mayor’s Choice Award; Filthy Gorgeous on Main, earning the Merry & Bright Award for showstopper level of excellence; and Southern Scape, recipient of the Holly Jolly Award as the most holiday-inspired entry.

“Thank you to our 2024 Judges, who had a really tough job this year,” Overcash said. “Congratulations to our 2024 Polar Express Christmas Tree Trail winners.”

These winners for the tree trail will be recognized and receive their awards at Madison City Council’s meeting on Jan. 9 at 6 p.m.

On Dec. 6, other events were active along Main Street. The Snow Globe with its bright white lights gave a photo backdrop for individuals, families and couples . . . complete with Santa Claus posing for the camera.

Throughout the evening, Christmas carols filled the air from talented musicians who performed in Madison City Community Orchestra. Children marched in the Glow Stick Parade.

For the Wassail Festival, merchants and business owners along Main Street prepared batches of homemade wassail for people to sample and then vote for their favorite recipe. The 2024 trophy was presented to Tammy Hall, owner of Main Street Cafe.

Organizations and businesses that played key roles for the tree trail were Madison Chamber of Commerce; Huntsville- Madison County Public Library, in particular the Madison branch; Madison Visionary Partners or MVP; Rotary Club of Madison; and Shoppes of Historic Downtown Madison.

“The community has done nothing but express how beautiful the trail is and how much they love and look forward to this event each year,” Overcash said. “Record crowds again prove what a wonderful event this is for Madison.”

The 2024 Madison Christmas Parade, sponsored by the City of Madison, proceeded on Hughes Road on Dec. 14. “This year’s theme, ‘I’ll Be Home for Christmas’ reminded us what a great place we call home,” Overcash said.
