Huntsville-Madison County CVB to offer walking tours of historic downtown Madison

MADISON – Enjoy the Alabama spring weather with a side of local history on Huntsville-Madison County Convention and Visitors Bureau’s spring history walking tours.

The CVB offers walking tours of local historic districts guided by local history experts every April and October. The spring tours take place on Saturday mornings throughout the month and feature a different historic area. This year, the first two weekends will showcase the  Twickenham Historic District in downtown Huntsville. The last two weekends of the month will explore downtown Madison.

Vice President of Tourism for the CVB, Pam Williams said the tours are “part of a statewide initiative to invite participants to enjoy the historical, artistic and cultural aspects of the downtowns.”

The tours are led by volunteer guides. The Madison tours have been led by a variety of guides from city council members to lifelong residents with generations of their families from the town.

“We have had elected Madison City Council members serve as guides as well as Larry and Walt Anderson, and each chooses the stories to share and landmarks to spotlight,” said Williams.

The tours are free, last about 1-1.5 hours, and are an educational experience open to locals and tourists alike. The tours of Madison will take place April 19 and April 26 and will start at 10 a.m. at the historic roundhouse downtown. Tours are weather dependent.
