Billie Goodson throws his hat in the ring for Madison City Council

MADSION – Long-time Madison resident Billie Goodson has announced his intentions to run for Madison City Council District 3. The seat is currently held by Teddy Powell who has not yet announced an intention to run for re-election. Powell has held the seat since his election in 2016.

“Madison is in a pivotal time. If you look at the ‘to-do’ list for the next council, there are huge decisions that are going to be made that will make a lasting impact. Madison is my home, and I want to use my private sector experience to help the city grow,” Goodson said.

Growth management and responsible fiscal management are at the very top of the list. The council is tasked with approving the city’s budget which has been between $60-80 million annually over the last several years.

Goodson graduated from the University of South Alabama in Mobile. While attending the University, Billie was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Alabama Army National Guard in the Ordnance Corps. He would later come to the Huntsville-Madison area for the first time to complete his Officers Basic Course; planting a seed that would bloom later in life.

Goodson’s work as a civilian for the U.S. Government and in the private sector took him to several places across the country. After his four children graduated from high school, Goodson and his wife wanted to move back to the community that his Redstone Arsenal training days had led them to fall in love with: Madison.

“I am very passionate about this community. I got involved in the Madison Station Historical Preservation Society a number of years ago. I love history and Madison has a very rich history. I also think that we need to learn from history and work together to make sure that Madison’s future is as bright as it can be.”

Goodson serves as the Chair of the Madison Police Advisory Committee and participated in the City’s first Civic Engagement Academy, last fall. He and his wife have lived in a historic, downtown neighborhood in Madison since 2016.

The Madison Municipal election is August 26, 2025. Goodson is the only announced candidate for the District 3 seat so far. The deadline for candidates to file is in June. The entire council and the mayor will be on the August ballot.
