Foundation goes out of this world for Vive le Livre

MADISON – Vive le Livre 2025, the annual fundraiser event for Huntsville-Madison County Public Library, will venture out of this world for its featured author in 2025.

Andy Weir, author of “The Martian,” “Project Hail Mary” and other best-selling science fiction books, will be the 2025 guest author. He received the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer in 2016.

Huntsville-Madison County Library Foundation hosts Vive le Livre as a celebration to honor the power of books, authors and the transformative role of libraries.

This unforgettable evening is scheduled for Sept. 24 at the Jackson Center, 6001 Moquin Drive in Huntsville. The event will begin with a cocktail reception at 6 p.m. A seated dinner will follow at 7 p.m., along with Weir’s keynote address.

Proceeds from Vive will support programs for all 10 HMCPL branches with print materials, digital resources and vital projects, like Summer Reading and Workforce Development.

“Weir’s books do not only entertain us but also inspire curiosity and a love for science,” HMCPL Board Member Rob Warren said. “Weir has a unique talent for blending science fiction with compelling storytelling.”

Weir has established himself as a leader among science fiction writers:

* “The Martian” (2011) — Weir’s debut novel follows astronaut Mark Watney, stranded on Mars and using his ingenuity to survive. “The Martian” reached no. 12 on “The New York Times” Best-Seller List. The novel was adapted into a movie in 2015, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Weir)

* “Artemis” (2017) — Set on the moon, this novel follows smuggler Jazz Bashara as she becomes embroiled in a conspiracy. The book showcases Weir’s signature blend of science and storytelling.

* “Project Hail Mary” (2021) — This novel features a lone astronaut on a mission to save Earth from disaster. The book was a finalist for the 2022 Hugo Award for Best Novel.
