Collierville turns tables on Bob Jones volleyball at Supreme Courts
MADISON – Bob Jones defeated Tennessee’s Collierville at home Friday to stop a losing streak that reached two earlier in the week.
The Lady Dragons, however, avenged that setback with a 2-1 win over the Lady Patriots 18-25, 25-20, 15-7 in the Supreme Courts Tournament of Champions in Guntersville on Saturday.
Both teams are ranked in the Top 10 regardless of classification in Alabama and Tennessee.
In a stretch dating back to Aug. 27, Bob Jones, ranked No. 3 in Class 6A, defeated No. 5 Spain Park 3-0, fell to No. 2 Buckhorn 2-1, lost to then-No. 1 Thompson 2-1 and then downed Collierville before heading to Guntersville.
In Lake City, Bob Jones was scheduled to play Sylacauga and Tennessee teams Walker Valley, Oakland and Nolensville. Pool play scores weren’t available as of Sunday.
In an earlier bracket match before losing to Collierville, Bob Jones defeated Creekview from Georgia 2-0 (25-23, 25-17).
Following the Friday win over the Lady Dragons prior to the tournament, Lady Patriots head coach Jenny Jarrett said the team’s difficult schedule is part of shaping the squad.
“We were right there in both of those matches we lost this week (to Buckhorn and Thompson),’’ she said. “I mean, Thompson, it was 16-14 in the fifth set and could have gone either way, really. I think it was a good learning experience, and hopefully, we’ll be ready next time we see them.”
In Friday’s match with Collierville, Bob Jones won in four sets of the best-of-five 25-17, 25-20, 23-25, 24-15.
“We’ve played with the lineup, but we’re getting to where we want to be,” Jarrett said. “I’m happy with how we’re coming along.’’
