Bob Jones defeats Golden Eagles in jamboree game

BY JIM SANDOVAL / SPECIAL TO THE RECORD

The Bob Jones Patriots opened the 2011 campaign with a convincing 42-21 win over the Athens Golden Eagles in their jamboree game at Madison City Schools Stadium Friday night.

The Bob Jones offense put 35 points on the board in the first half before turning the game over to substitutes.  They began the scoring with a quick five play, 60 yard scoring drive with quarterback Jeffrey Moss hitting receiver Nick Richardson with a pass in the corner of the end zone for the touchdown. Richardson made a great catch, going high over a defender to haul it in.

After a defensive stop and another drive Moss kept the ball and dashed 7 yards for the second score. One series later the Patriots put their third touchdown on the board on a 15 yard pass from Moss to Kevin Wright to extend their lead to 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.

After a muffed punt the Golden Eagles got on the board on a 24 yard pass from sophomore quarterback William Matthews to Roderick Randolph to close to 21-7.  Bob Jones wasted no time retaliating.  On the ensuing kickoff Patriot return man Kevin Wright found a seam and then outran the defenders for a 100 yard touchdown run.  Running back Jay Rogers scored on a 3 yard run to bring the first half score to 35-7.

Early in the third quarter defensive back Rishad Goode intercepted a pass and brought it back over 50 yards for the final Patriot score.  Athens was able to score twice late, on a Calvin Tolliver 2 yard run and a Lloyd McDonald fumble recovery that he brought back 20 plus yards for the score.

The Patriots first team defense basically shut down Athens’ offense while their offense was just about unstoppable in the first half.  Linebacker Reggie Ragland spent almost as much time in the Athens backfield as their running backs. Kicker Andrew Dunn was also a standout, consistently kicking the ball into the opponent’s end zone, forcing the Golden Eagles to start their offensive series from their own 20 yard line.  Coach Kyle Rose was able to play most of his roster which should help provide more experienced depth for the team in the regular season.

The Patriots host West Creek High School of Clarksville, Tennessee Friday August 26 in the regular season opener.
