BJHS not looking ahead

SHANNON LAMPTON / FOR THE RECORD

Bob Jones High School is not looking ahead. Good teams don’t, even when it is tempting, even in the games that some would consider easy.

Coach Kevin Rose and his players have taken a workmanlike approach all year, dealing with one game at a time.

This focus led to another 6A Region 8 Championship, and they know they have two more regular season games to go before they start thinking about state.

This week, they take on 4-4 Decatur in a game that should be one of the easy ones.  But, the Patriots know that you play the games because anyone could win any given Friday, and Decatur has not given up.

Could Decatur break the Patriot’s defense and wrestle a win away from the Region 8 champs?  Yes.  Will they?  Probably not.  The Patriots are on a roll.  Last week, they hammered rival Sparkman 50-7 and it wasn’t even that close.  Jeffrey Moss completed 9 of 14 passing attempts with 147 yards.  He had his pick of receivers and Bob Jones never looked back.  Everything they tried worked, even a halfback pass which went for a touchdown.

Decatur, meanwhile, is coming off a 15-7 loss to Hazel Green-a game in which Hazel Green held Decatur to -3 yards rushing in the first half.  The Red Raiders looked like they might have something going early in the first half, but they fumbled it inside the Trojans 25 yard line and Hazel Green recovered.

They are going to have to come up with a spectacular game plan and play flawless football to keep it close, much less win.  Bob Jones just needs to play the football that it has been showcasing all season, with its 1,346 yards rushing and 1,184 yards passing, and not look ahead to state rival and roadblock Hoover.
