Madison Street Festival awards 2011 grants

The Madison Street Festival governing board has awarded $3,500 in grants to six community groups.

“After we pay our bills, proceeds from the annual event are given back to the Madison community through grants,” 2011 vice president Brenda Parker said.

“In the past, the festival board has given money to the Madison City Schools band programs and libraries; Madison Public Library; Madison Senior Center; and Dublin Village Apartments,” Parker said. “Organizations such as these greatly enhance the character and livability of our community.”

Grants were presented at the Madison City Council meeting on Dec. 19.

Inside-Out Ministries received $1,248 to assist families in paying utilities, rent or other special needs. Larry and Deborah Ward founded the all-volunteer charity to assist Madison residents struggling to provide the basics of life.

Madison Children’s Theatre will use its $450 grant to assist parents of long-time students with tuition costs. This non-profit fine arts organization presents productions at its facility and one annual production at the Von Braun Center.

Daylife Camp’s mission is to provide lifelong friendships and skills for young adults with disabilities. This group received $352.

Madison Young Marines will apply its $500 grant to help with travel expenses to attend veterans’ activities with the national affiliate in Washington, D.C.

Madison Beautification Board received $850 to place an additional ‘signature’ trash receptacle at City Hall. The Madison Street Festival board donated $100 for an engraved brick paver at Madison Hospital.

In the early 1990s, proceeds from the Madison Street Festival were used to build the gazebo in downtown Madison.

Madison Street Festival Inc. is a non-profit, 501(c) 4 organization. The objective of this all-volunteer effort is “to provide a pleasant day for families of the community,” Parker said.

Groups can apply for grants during August by completing an application at madisonstreetfestival.org. The festival is held annually on the first Saturday of October. The 2012 festival date is Oct. 6.
