MADISON – To start the week on a positive note, students at West Madison Elementary School will gather for an assembly on Monday mornings.

“On Tuesday, Sept. 2, we have a new activity going on at West Madison — morning assemblies,” principal Dr. Daphne Jah said. “Because of the Monday holiday for Labor Day, we will have our first assembly on Tuesday.”

When students arrive at 7:10 a.m., they will continue to report to their designated area, the cafeteria or library and then to their classroom at 7:25 a.m. Teachers then will escort their students to the gym.

“Specialty teachers will be on duty in the halls and gym to make sure students get to their designated spots safely,” Jah said.

During the assembly, the West Madison student body will say “The Pledge of Allegiance,” learn patriotic songs and hear the lunch menu. Teachers will present character-building exercises.

“On occasion, students will be recognized by their peers for special awards,” Jah said. “In time, the children will take on a leadership role and lead our assemblies.” Students will go to their classrooms at 7:50 a.m.

For the rest of the school year, West Madison assemblies will be held on Monday mornings.
