MADISON – Leah Boyd at Bob Jones High School has been selected as alternate to Most Outstanding Female Choir Student in District V.

“I especially became infatuated with singing when I joined middle school choir in seventh grade and when I performed in my first musical in eighth grade,” 16-year-old Boyd said.

Her audition for the 2015 outstanding choral student required a written packet with resume and recommendation letters, vocal audition and interview. District V covers north-central and northwest Alabama.

Auditions were held at Randolph School in Huntsville on Nov. 3, sponsored by Alabama Vocal Association, the choral division of Alabama Music Educators Association.

“I sang ‘La Vezzosa Pastorella,’ an operatic aria by Italian composer Dominico Bruni. It is a challenging, but fun, piece for a classically trained soprano,” Boyd, a lifelong Madisonian, said.

During her interview, the committee “was interested in hearing about my experiences in singing, both classical and contemporary songs. I also described how I would like to continue in choral music and vocal performance professionally after college,” she said.

For the past five years, Boyd has been accepted in the All State Chorus and received superior ratings in many vocal assessments.

At Bob Jones, she participates with Tri-M Music Honor Society, National Honor Society, Patriot Singers directed by Randall Fields and Patriot Players theatre. This month, she is acting in Bob Jones’ production of “Sleeping Beauty and the Zs.”

At First Baptist Church of Huntsville, Boyd sings in the Youth Praise Band and Student Choir and is involved in local, national and international missions projects. She has performed with local community theatre, including “Madame Butterfly,” “Legally Blonde: The Musical,” “Big: The Musical”; and “Annie.”

A piano student for eight years, Boyd holds piano awards at both district and state levels with Alabama Music Teachers Association. Currently, she studies tap and jazz at The Dance Company.

Her parents are Al and Myrna Boyd. “My parents moved to Madison because of the strong school system,” Leah said.

Leah plans to attend a college with a strong vocal performance program.
