MADISON – Shandi Burrows is the first teenager to serve with Madison Friends of the Library board, a volunteer group that promotes Madison Public Library’s patrons and facilities.

“We’re thrilled to have Shandi’s professional performance in this position with lots of responsibilities,” branch manager Sarah Sledge said. “I cannot say enough great (comments) about this up-and-coming student.”

Burrows accepted ‘Friends’ President Dave Butler’s invitation to work as secretary. “I agreed quickly (to) further my experience list and future in the library system,” Burrows said. She plans to earn a master’s degree in library and information science to become a youth librarian.

Burrows has volunteered at the library since 2013. “I’ve loved it from the beginning. Being a teen volunteer entitles me to help with teen and children’s programs and other fun activities,” she said.

She also appears as Roary the Lion, the library mascot.

When reading, she enjoys the classics and other books set circa 1900. Her favorite book, “The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate” by Jacqueline Kelly is a sentimental story about a girl’s searchi for what she loves to do in the world.

“Libraries are an integral part of any community. It’s not just a place to read; it’s a place that you can have fun and meet new people,” she said. “In addition, libraries provide valuable services, such as Internet access, assistance in finding jobs and government resources and a wide variety of youth and adult programs.”

As the only youth, Burrows feels “like everyone respects me on the board, which is important in a committee that supports the community. Most (board members) have known my work ethic for (two) years.”

An incoming sophomore at Bob Jones High School, Burrows “absolutely adores the school.” She is involved with theatre. Her work has been published in “Electic” magazine and “Patriot Pages” website.

Her parents are Kim and Shania Burrows, and Shandi has one brother, Conor. The family moved from Athens 14 years ago.

Madison Public Library’s address is 130 Plaza Blvd. For more information, call 256-461-0046.
