MADISON COUNTY – With students across Madison County returning to school in early August, the Salvation Army hopes to prepare children who need a little help with the right gear for the classroom.

“The cost of school supplies can be overwhelming to some families. The Salvation Army, with your help, is happy to be able to assist with meeting these needs,” community relations coordinator Lydia Pennington said.

“Each year, there are many children in need of basic school supplies. This year, the Salvation Army is partnering with a handful of Madison County schools that are not recipients of any school supply drives and are in need of our help,” Pennington said.

The Salvation Army believes that these schools’ teachers and administrators are the best choice to distribute these donations to the children with the greatest need. “Please consider joining us as we help these schools equip their children to succeed,” Pennington said.

Needed desk supplies are backpacks; writing, copier and construction paper; yellow #2 pencils, sharpeners, erasers and boxes; zippered notebook bags; pens and highlighters; rulers; pointed and blunt-tipped scissors; notebooks; folders; three-ring binders; and index cards.

For recreation time, students need Play-Doh, post-it notes, ear buds, Elmer’s glue, glue sticks, dry-erase markers/erasers and crayons.

For clean-up, classrooms need paper towels, liquid anti-bacterial soap and sanitizer, disinfectant wipes and spray, all-purpose cleaners, facial tissue, bandages, plastic bags, brown lunch bags and rest mats.

Individuals can deliver donations to The Salvation Army office at 2114 Oakwood Ave. NW in Huntsville or directly to the school of choice. “With classes beginning the first week of August, we ask that all donations be turned in no later than July 30,” Pennington said.

Anyone who wants to volunteer to help sort donations can meet on July 31 at 2114 Oakwood Ave. from 9 a.m. to noon.
