MADISON – Check another column in the “State Champion” list for Bob Jones High School.

The Patriot Math Team with Alan Grissom, Joey Li, Aditi Limaye, Winston Van and Anthony Zhu won the state title in ciphering at the 2016 Statewide High School Math Contest.

The University of North Alabama (UNA) hosted the event on April 9. Alabama Council of Teachers of Mathematics and Alabama Association of College Teachers of Mathematics sponsor the contest.

Other state-level victories are first place for written round, algebra II/trigonometry; Joey Li, first, comprehensive; Aditi Limaye, third, comprehensive; and David Li, second, Algebra II. At district, Bob Jones ranked first in both comprehensive and algebra II written.

For the second consecutive year, Li reached a perfect score of 250. Freshman Aditi Limaye missed only one question to rank third with 245. A UNA professor/clinician told Bob Jones coach Kimberly Cox that she is already thinking of questions to challenge Li and Limaye in 2017.

Earning state honors in written for algebra II/trig were Corey Tolbert, fifth place; Cheng Zhou, eighth; Victoria Lee, ninth; and Joshua Byers, 12th. In comprehensive, Ada van der Zijp-Tan, Tony Tian and Anthony Zhu also won honors.

“‘Comprehensive’ students have completed algebra II/trig and can be tested on any type of mathematics,” Cox said. ‘Written’ awards refer to preliminary testing in a two-hour, 50-question multiple-choice test.

“Ciphering is a ‘Jeopardy’-style tournament,” Cox said. Students race the clock and other students to get the best score. Students earn 10 points by answering within 30 seconds or decreasing points for longer times.

The invitation-only UNA tournament uses earlier results of teams’ comprehensive scores. The ciphering tournament consists of four rounds of 10 questions each.

In preliminary, district-level testing, Bob Jones achieved these stats:

* Comprehensive — Joey Li, first; Aditi Limaye, second; Ada van der Zijp-Tan, fifth.

* Algebra II — David Li, first; Corey Tolbert, third; Cheng Zhou, fourth; Victoria Lee, fifth.

Bob Jones’ team included freshmen through seniors. For more information, visit una.edu/math/mathcontest.
