Greg Hulsey picked to replace Connie Spears on school board

MADISON – The Madison City Council made their decision this week on who will be the next school board member for Madison City Schools. The council voted Tuesday night to appoint Greg Hulsey. He will replace school board member Connie Spears, who has been on the board for ten years.

Hulsey is the CEO of Maynor & Mitchell Eye Center/Eye Surgery Center of North Alabama. He was previously the director of practice and analysis and improvement for Children’s of Alabama. He served on the school district’s capital finance planning committee in August.

“I am very honored to have been selected by the City Council to serve on the Madison City Schools Board of Education. I sought out this position because I believe very strongly in giving back to one’s community, and I can think of no better group to serve than our city’s greatest resource – our children and our schools,” Hulsey said. “My immediate goals are to get to know my fellow board members better and to learn more about both the challenges and opportunities facing our schools, and then to work with the rest of the board and Superintendent Parker to serve our students in every way that we can.”

Hulsey was one of four finalist considered for their appointment. The other three candidates were Kim Bowen, Scott Edwards, Greg Hulsey and Alice Lessman. Edwards and Lessman are also CEOs of local companies, while Bowen is a former educator for the Madison City Schools.

“Growth is a challenge for us, because we want to provide the best for our children, and we should,” Hulsley told the city council members when he was interviewed for the position earlier this month. He said keeping the schools performing at the extremely high level is a top priority.
