Patriots down Huntsville, Grissom and Denham Springs before entering Perfect Game High School Showdown

MADISON – The Bob Jones Patriots baseball team had a busy week, earning wins against Denham Springs, Grissom and Huntsville before entering the Perfect Game High School Showdown at Hoover over the weekend. Despite heading into the tournament with a win over Benedictine Military, GA the Patriots dropped the final two games against 7A foes Mountain Brook and Hewitt-Trussville. They finished fourth in the tournament.

7A #8 Mountain Brook (11-1) 4, 7A #1 Bob Jones (12-3) 2:

Bob Jones fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 4-2 loss to Mountain Brook on Friday. Mountain Brook scored on a groundout by Kelly and a single by Payne in the first inning.

Mountain Brook opened up scoring in the first inning. White was hit by a pitch, driving in a run.

Nick Brown took the loss for Bob Jones as he allowed two runs on zero hits.  Bob Jones launched one home run on the day. Slate Alford had a long ball in the fifth inning.  Caden Rose went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Patriots in hits.

7A #4 Hewitt-Trussville (10-4) 10, 7A #1 Bob Jones (12-4) 6:

Saturday’s game against Hewitt-Trussville was a heartbreaker for Bob Jones, as they lost the lead late in a 10-6 defeat. The game was tied at two with Hewitt-Trussville batting in the top of the seventh when an error scored two runs for Hewitt-Trussville.

Bob Jones collected four hits and Hewitt-Trussville had ten in the high-scoring affair.  John Herron took the loss for Bob Jones as he lasted one and one-third innings, allowing five hits and seven runs. Stuart Edge started the game and allowed three hits and one run over four innings.

Cam Hill went for the long ball in the seventh inning with a grand slam to cut the Husky lead to 10-6.  Mitchell Daly, Caden Rose, Dylan Ray, and Hill all had one hit for the Pats.

7A #1 Bob Jones (12-2) 10, 3A #5 Benedictine Military, GA (7-4) 0:

Dylan Ray was brilliant on the pitcher’s mound as he threw a no-hitter to lead Bob Jones past Benedictine 10-0.  Bob Jones opened scoring in the first inning when Ray singled up the middle to score a run.

Bob Jones extended the lead in the fifth inning with four runs for a 5-0 lead off Vanderbilt commit Carter Holton. The big inning was led by a home run by Slate Alford, by Brycen Hammonds, and a double by Caden Rose.

Ray pitched Bob Jones to victory as he lasted five innings, allowing zero hits and zero runs while striking out six en route to a no-hitter!  Holton took the loss for Benedictine. He lasted four innings, allowing five hits and six runs while striking out eight.

Bob Jones hit one home run on the day. Alford had a dinger in the fifth inning.

The Patriots saw the ball well, racking up eight hits in the game. Ray and Rose managed multiple hits for Bob Jones with a triple and single by Ray and single and double for Rose.  Mitchell Daly and Ryan Crawford added doubles.

7A #1 Bob Jones (11-2) 11, Denham Springs, LA (4-3) 1:

Bob Jones defeated Denham Springs 11-1 on Thursday thanks to six runs in the fifth inning. Bob Jones’ big bats in the inning were led by walks by JW Hopkins, Slate Alford, Max Soliz JR, and Cam Hill and a double by Caden Rose.

Denham Springs fired up the offense in the first inning scoring 1 run on 3 errors and a hit.

In the bottom of the first inning, Bob Jones Patriots Varsity tied things up at one when Hill hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring one run.  Bob Jones pulled away for good with four runs in the third inning.

In the third Soliz JR drew a walk, scoring one run, Hill drew a walk, scoring one run, and Dylan Ray drew a walk, scoring one run.

The Patriots notched six runs in the fifth inning. Bob Jones’ offense in the inning came from walks by Hopkins, Alford, Soliz JR, and Hill and a double by Rose.

Thomas Ballard led Bob Jones to victory on the hill. He allowed one hit and one run over five innings, striking out seven and walking one.  Rose went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Bob Jones in hits.

7A #1 Bob Jones (10-2) 13, Grissom (3-6) 0:

Bob Jones defeated Grissom 13-0 on Wednesday as three pitchers combined to throw a shutout.

The Patriots opened scoring in the first inning as an error scored two runs.  Bob Jones tallied six runs in the second inning. Patriot batters contributing to the big inning included Cam Hill, Dylan Ray, Brett Brosnan, and Ryan West, who all drove in runs.

Logan Hittle pitched Bob Jones to victory to pick up his first win of the season.. He surrendered zero runs on two hits over three innings, striking out two. Julian Cyree and Luttrell entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Bob Jones launched two home runs on the day. Ray went deep in the second inning. Brycen Hammonds put one out in the third inning.  Bob Jones collected 13 hits as West and Hammonds each racked up multiple hits.

7A #1 Bob Jones (9-2) 9, Huntsville (5-3) 7:

Bob Jones jumped out to a 6-1 and saw Huntsville score multiple runs in the 6th and 7th innings to tie the game at seven before some late game heroics for the Patriots.

Bob Jones starting pitcher Stuart Edge was impressive in his 2 2/3 innings as he allowed one hit, one earned run and one walk while striking out four Panthers. He was relieved by senior John Herron who worked 2 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and no runs while walking two and striking out two.

Collin East was next out of the bullpen and allowed two earned runs before senior Sam Maynard came in to work an inning allowing two hits and two earned runs while striking out two.

Ben Creekmore was the winning pitcher after working an inning on the mound, allowing three hits and one earned run.

The scoring started early for Bob Jones as the Patriots plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Mitchell Daly got on by error and Max Soliz, Jr walked. Cam Hill then came through with a 2 RBI single to stake the Patriots to a 2-0 lead.

The Patriots would add to the lead in the home half of the second inning. Tyler Jones got things started with a one-out single and Caden Rose walked with two outs before junior Slate Alford jumped on a breaking ball and hammered it over the left field fence to extend the lead to 5-0 for Bob Jones.

Huntsville jumped on the board in the 3rd inning as Xavier Vaz legged out an infield single and later scored from second base on a single by senior Nick Constantine. Wade Passler, who earlier walked in the inning was thrown out trying to score on the play.

Bob Jones tacked on a run in the bottom of the 4th as Jones once again got things started with a leadoff single and came around to score on a single off the bat of Rose.

The score remained 6-1 Patriots until the top of the sixth when Huntsville scored three runs to cut the deficit to 6-4.

The bottom of the sixth saw the Patriots add on a run as Ryan Crawford and Rose singled. Sophomore JW Hopkins walked and Daly drew a two-out walk to force home a run to make it 7-4.

The Panthers rallied in the 7th inning to tie things up as Passler led things off with a walk and pinch hitter Michael Pfeiffer delivered a solid single. Freshman Stone Lawless jumped on the first pitch he saw for an RBI double to bring the Panthers closer at 7-5. Guyette delivered another RBI single to make it 7-6 and Sottolano tied things up at 7 with an RBI single of his own.

The Patriots were able to escape further damage before the bottom of the 7th heroics. Hill lead off with a double on the first pitch he saw. That set the stage for Dylan Ray as he promptly deposited the first pitch, he saw over the left field fence for the walk off homerun giving the Patriots a 9-7 win.
