Flanigan sails on USS Henry M. Jackson submarine
BANGOR, Wash. – Seaman Scott Flanigan of Madison is serving in the U.S. Navy aboard one of the world’s most advanced ballistic missile submarines, the USS Henry M. Jackson.
A 2012 graduate of Bob Jones High School, Flanigan now works as an electronics technician. He is responsible for maintaining navigation of the ship and maintenance on navigation equipment to confirm that the ship is operating properly.
Based in Bangor, Wash., the USS Henry M. Jackson is one of 14 ballistic missile submarines in the Ohio-class vessels. The submarine measures 560 feet long, 42 feet wide and weighing more than 16,500 tons. Its nuclear-powered propulsion system helps push the ship through the water at more than 20 knots.
“I enjoy the camaraderie and professional atmosphere within my division,” said Flanigan. “I like the potential for personal improvement. You definitely will not be the same person after serving here.”

Schmall is commodore of Submarine Squadron 17 of Bangor. “Our team is filled with dedicated, hardworking, and highly qualified professionals who hold uncommon levels of responsibility and accountability in support of our nation’s strategic deterrence mission. Their work ethic, commitment and enthusiasm are second to none.”
“When we go underway, it is surreal,” Flanigan said. “It gives you a chance to put your future in perspective. That feeling of determination is definitely a boost to my morale.”
According to Navy officials, because of the demanding environment aboard submarines, personnel are accepted only after rigorous testing and observation. Submariners are some of the most highly trained and skilled people in the Navy.
“Serving in the Navy means that I have the ability to accomplish something I couldn’t on my own,” Flanigan said. “I love working with a team who has the best interest at home in heart.”
