Madison Police Department receives two new vehicles

The Madison Police Department’s fleet of vehicles has expanded by two thanks to a donation made Monday night by County Commissioner Dale Strong.

Strong presented the keys for two 2011 Crown Victoria’s during Monday’s night’s meeting.

“Public safety is near and dear to my heart,” Strong said.

Mayor Paul Finley said he is especially appreciative of the donation during these tough economic times.

“In a tough budget time, that’s fantastic,” Finely said.

With several of the city’s police vehicles eclipsing 200,000 miles, Police Chief Larry Muncey said the donation would drastically help out the department.

“Words aren’t enough,” Muncey said. “This is a huge impact to our city.”

In other actions, the council:

— Recognized the Bob Jones High School boys’ swimming and diving team, which recently captured its seventh consecutive state championship.

“This is becoming an annual event in the city of Madison,” Finley joked as he introduced the team.

—Received an update from the recreation advisory board. The board plans to have a final report in the coming months.

“When you see what these guys bring back, you’re going to be really happen with all their hard work,” said Council representative Steve Haraway.

—Heard from resident Kurt Webb, who addressed the council concerning changing the city code for bikers who use Hughes Road.

—Approved the final change order for payment to Moon Construction Services for work completed in connection with the police department addition.

—Cody Phillips, city building director, announced the department will present the council with a proposed building code change from the 2003 version to 2006 version at the next meeting March 14.
