Celebrate, remember and fight back this Friday

The 2011 Relay for Life of Madison will take place Friday, June 24 from 7 p.m. until the following morning at 7 a.m. The event will take place at the Madison City Schools Stadium, located at 211 Celtic Dr.

A final decision about what to do in case of inclement weather will not be made until Thursday evening. If plans change, information will be provided at Relayforlife.org/madisonal.

Celia Werner, community representative for Relay for the American Cancer Society, said the backup location is at Dublin Park.

Werner said the Relay is free to the public.

“A lot of people think that they would have to pay to get in,” Werner said. “As far as the public goes, they’re welcome to come and walk and we hope that they would stay as long as possible.”

She said there are going to be games, activities, bands and performances throughout the Relay.

Team members can come and go throughout the evening and early morning.

“Among the 12 hours, we ask that each team have one person walking,” Werner explained. “It’s a relay in the fact that your team members are switching off walking for the 12 hours.”

She said people should bring an energetic attitude and plenty of money.

“It’s free to get in, but then whatever the teams are doing at their campsites will be on-site fundraising,” Werner said.

Each individual participating is asked to raise $100 and each team is asked to raise $1,000 as a goal. However, if the goal cannot be reached the individuals and teams can still participate.

Teams can still be formed through going to Relayforlife.org/Madison.

“Even if they just walked up on the day of Relay and wanted to be a team, they can do that also,” Werner said.

She said if someone comes alone, they can walk as an individual or be paired with a team.

“I’m sure that our teams would love to have extra people,” Werner said.

For people interested in simply making donations, donations can be made through the website or be sent in to 2745 Bob Wallace Ave., Suite A Huntsville, Ala. 35805.
