Madison Academy defeats Randolph, Westminster in jamboree

BY SCOTT WRIGHT / SPECIAL TO THE RECORD

It is jamboree football at its core.

The teams play from their simplest playbook, not wanting to reveal anything about their offensive sets or defensive schemes. Madison Academy ushers in a new era with a wide receiver, Hunter Olive, turning into a quarterback and several freshmen and sophomores logging big minutes.

During the jamboree games held Friday, Aug. 19, Olive showed flashes of why the coaches felt he was the perfect candidate to take over the quarterback position, even while handing the ball off on nearly every possession.

Senior running backs Khyle Jackson and Marcus Sease both broke long runs early and freshman split end Kerryon Johnson ran in a screen pass for a score.

Later, Johnson would score the only touchdown in the contest against Westminster.  The Madison Academy first-string defense proved stout in limited action, limiting both offenses (Westminster Christian Academy and Randolph) to minimal gains.

While Madison Academy prepares for a first week matchup with 4A North Jackson, they continue to see growth even in a jamboree atmosphere.  This year appears to have great potential for Coach Eric Cohu and the Mustangs.
