Downtown Rescue Mission 5K is Aug. 11
Buckner said about 200 people participated in last year’s race, and he’s expecting 200-400 this year.
The Downtown Rescue Mission (DRM) is giving area runners the opportunity to help the homeless.
On Saturday, Aug. 11, the DRM is hosting the second annual Run to Rescue 5K.
Development Coordinator Corey Buckner originated the race’s concept while attending a church function two years ago. He met now former Bob Jones High School track coach Robin Gaines and the two worked together to jumpstart the fundraiser.
“You not only get your exercise, but it pales in comparison to what a lot of homeless go through on a day-to-day basis,” Buckner said. “You’re helping support people whose whole world is in shambles for a season.”
Bob Jones track and cross country students will serve as hosts and race marshals.

Every runner will receive a Brooks Dri-Fit shirt, and the first 100 who sign up will receive Chick –fil-A specials. Overall winners will receive a plaque.

Regular registration is $30 and is open from Wednesday, Aug. 1 to Monday, Aug. 6. Late Registration is $35 and will be from Tuesday, Aug. 7 to Wednesday, Aug. 8. Only individuals who pre-register and register will be guaranteed an event tech shirt.
Race age groups are as follows: 0 – 9, 10 – 19, 20 – 29, 30 – 39, 40 – 49, 50 – 59, 60 – 69 and 70+. Masters will be 40+.
