United Way book drive encourages reading

United Way of Madison County recently helped 2,000 students receive books to read throughout the summer.

Mill Creek, Martin Luther King and Madison Crossroads elementary school students were treated on Friday, June 22, to an afternoon filled with popcorn, snow cones, inflatables and summer reading bags filled with books.

Mill Creek, Martin Luther King and Madison Crossroads elementary school students were treated on Friday, June 22, to an afternoon filled with popcorn, snow cones, inflatables and summer reading bags filled with books.

Marcie Williams, volunteer coordinator, said A Day of Action book drive was an opportunity for kids to brush up on their reading skills.

“Some don’t have the money for books or way to the library, so we decided to bring it to them,” she said.

The books also came with a journal so readers could document their reading experiences.

“During the summer, their skills get rusty,” she said. “With parents working, we thought this would be a fun and educational way for us to help out.”

Williams said the United Way does have plans to sponsor another Day of Action next year.
