Horizon to host Queen’s Quest Chess Tournament

MADISON – Beth Bero hopes the 2013 Queen’s Quest Chess Tournament won’t involve the same circumstances as in 2011.

With Bero as sponsor, Horizon Elementary School hosted the chess tournament in 2011, just weeks after the tragic tornado outbreak. “We had a somewhat depressed attendance” then, Bero said.

Madison chess aficionados are positive the 2013 tourney will attract many participants. The 2013 Queen’s Quest tournament will be held May 18 at Horizon.

The tournament format will be in 5 Round Swiss configuration. Queen’s Quest is rated by the United States Chess Federation (USCF). Organizers will define four sections of players by grade: primary – K-3; elementary – K-5; junior high – K-9; and open – K-12.

“Players are encouraged to play in the lowest section for which they’re eligible but may play in a higher section,” Bero said. Sections may be merged at the tournament director’s discretion. If sections do merge, contestants will receive all applicable prizes.

Time control for the game is 30 minutes with a 5-second delay (G/30d5). The five rounds of all-play will be held at 10:15 and 11:30 a.m. and 1, 2:15 and 3:30 p.m. The tournament director may choose to play the final two rounds sooner.

“All players must check in on Saturday morning, May 18 to verify attendance,” Bero said. On-site registration is scheduled for 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Late registration requires a first-round forfeit.

Trophies and medals will be awarded. Pizza, soft drink and other snacks will be sold, and coffee is free.

Deadline for mailing entries and payments is May 10. Contests must mail the entry form, USCF member identification and expiration date, bye requests and checks payable to Huntsville Chess Club (single check for entry and USCF memberships preferred).

Entry fee is $20. Late entrants will pay $30. All participants must be USCF members. Contestants should mail completed forms and fees to Gerald Larson, 2909 Gallalee Road, Huntsville, AL 35801.

For entry forms, visit hrzn.madisoncity.k12.al.us. For more information, call 256-682-3319 or email to jimweiner1@knology.net.
