MADISON – Students joining the band at Discovery Middle School can get a head start this summer.

Students who have not selected an instrument can try out woodwind, brass and percussion options on May 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the Discovery band room. Director Monroe Murray will assist in identifying ‘best fits’ for instruments, according to interest, size and shape.

Madison Band Supply employees will attend and assist families in acquiring instruments, as needed.

“We want all beginner students to be ready for Beginner Band Camp on June 17-21,” Murray said. Camp hours are 9 a.m. to noon. The camp is open to upcoming sixth-graders and older beginning their music education.

“Campers will be introduced to their instrument, basic assembly and care, fingering, embouchure, posture, key signature and other essential musical concepts,” Murray said. “They will learn in sectional and full band rehearsals.”

Cost for band camp is $85. At the end of camp, students will present a demonstration concert for family and friends.

Registration forms are available at Discovery or online at BandCampReg.DMSbands.org. For more information, contact Murray at LMMurray@madisoncity.k12.al.us.
