Sci-Quest plans ‘Red, White and Fun,’ then gives parents the night out

HUNTSVILLE – Sci-Quest Hands-on Science Center plans “Red, White and Fun” for the Fourth of July. They’re not forgetting a little fun for parents on July 6.

“Red White and Fun” will be held at Sci-Quest, 102-D Wynn Drive in Huntsville on July 4 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. “The stars and stripes will be in full effect as we celebrate our country’s 237th birthday at Sci-Quest,” marketing manager Jennifer Deermer said.

“Before rockets glare and fireworks are in the air, declare your right to have some science fun with red, white and blue experiments and activities,” Deermer said.

Youth will discover the reasons why fireworks flare in different colors. “They will make an explosive fireworks hat and see an eruption of patriotic foam in red, white and blue,” Deermer said. At no extra charge, everyone will enjoy an ice cream free ice cream sandwich (while supplies last).

Admission is $8 for children; $9, adults; and $8.50, senior citizens. Admission is free to military personnel, active and retired, and their families.

On July 6, the fun shifts to free time for mom and dad on Parents’ Night Out. Children can visit from 6 to 10 p.m. Drop-off begins at 5:30 p.m. Fee is $23.

Four- through six-year-olds will experience “the hum of the wheels and the roar of the engine,” Deermer said. They will explore the impacts of friction and collision, lift and thrust, while learning basic skills of hang time and speed. Each child will build and decorate a make-and-take racer.

Children seven years and older will feel the “need for speed” as they learn demands of a race car engineer, she said. Topics will include kinetic and potential energy and the difference between speed and velocity. They’ll design a race to test in Sci-Quest’s miniature wind tunnel.

In coming months, Sci-Quest plans to relocate to Madison in the former Winn-Dixie site on Madison Boulevard.
