MADISON – The Bob Jones High School Math Team ranked in first place at the University of Alabama Math Tournament on Nov. 8.

“I’m so proud of the math team for taking first place,” team coach and math teacher Kimberly Cox said. “Also, Bob Jones won seven out of the first 10 places … and eight out of the top 20 places.”

In addition, Bob Jones students won all top three trophies for individual competition, Cox said.

Math team students capturing the top three places in individual testing were Anthony Zhu, first; Ada van der Zijp-Tan, second; and Winston Van, third.

Other students in the top ten were Tina Tian, fifth; Shantanu Kadam, seventh; Nathan Fox, ninth; Amelia Goldston, tenth; and Tyler Tolbert, 18th.

Anthony Zhu, Ada van der Zijp-Tan, Winston Van, Amelia Goldston and Tyler Tolbert are only in their sophomore year, and Shantanu Kadam is a freshman. However, these younger students competed against all grades, even seniors.

“We parents could not be more proud and also thankful to their coach Kimberly Cox for all her patience and hard work in training them every Wednesday after school,” parent Maribel Tan said. “It is a lot of work and time that she spends with them.”

In other competition, Bob Jones Math Team competed in Math Fax with outstanding results on Nov. 5. “Our geometry team score, which is the sum of top three students’ scores, was 64. Our top three places (four students because of a tie) were Misa Ito and Marshall Wu at 18 and Shantanu Kadam and Alan Grissom at 23,” Cox said.

The advanced math team’s score was a perfect 75. Students with a perfect individual score of 25 were Ada van der Zijp-Tan, Amelia Goldston, Chan Lee, Joey Li and Tina Tian.

Other high scorers were Anna Flowers, Anthony Zhu, Ashley Dong, Dan Nguyen, Mathew Ganatra and Nathan Fox, 24 points; Claudia Chu, Demola Ayokanmbi, Ethan Smyth and Tyler Tolbert, 23; Byron He, Kaitlyn Cox and Wenle Mu, 22; and Emily Jeung, 21.
