ARDMORE – Life already has its added challenges for those with Spina Bifida, a developmental disorder in which the spinal cord does not close properly. Many affected can’t walk and therefore must use wheelchairs to get around.

For Ardmore resident Kayla Beard, who lives with spina bifida, another curveball has been thrown her way. The van she uses, which has been in service for more than several years, has experienced numerous breakdowns and malfunctions and makes it that much harder for Beard to live her life.

“If they don’t have a van to get around, they’re just stuck at home,” Beard said of people with the disorder. “To me, it’s a big deal because it just makes me realize that I need a way to get around because I need to be part of the community.”

In one facet of the drive to help raise money for a new van, Beard has organized a concert at Monte Sano Baptist Church to be held on May 9. Set to perform at the church are Rocket City Ridge, a gospel and country music group from Huntsville, and The Inspirations, a performing group made up of people with intellectual or physical challenges.

Beard is part of The Inspirations and, together with Rocket City Ridge, will end the show with a rendition of “Amazing Grace.” The show will begin at 6 p.m. and end at approximately 7:30 p.m.

“If anyone feels led to donate at the concert, we are accepting donations there,” Beard said.

All Redstone Federal Credit Union locations are also accepting funds for Beard. To donate, simply walk in and ask for Kayla’s Van Fund to donate any amount of money.

Without a van and built-in wheelchair lift that works properly, Beard’s family must physically lift her and place her in the family’s station wagon to travel anywhere outside her home for things such as watching her 15-year-old sister play flute in the Sparkman band. Beard also plays a prominent part in the Spina Bifida Association of Alabama, which hosts yearly events such as Bowl-a-thons at the Madison Bowling Center.

In addition to the concert, Beard has a GoFund account that goes towards a new van; to donate, email Beard at kaybugg04@yahoo.com.
