MADISON – Madison American Legion Post 229 will place flags at three Madison cemeteries on Nov. 7.

Placing flags will mark “the start of Veterans Day activities that will culminate on Nov. 11 with the Veterans Day Parade in downtown Huntsville,” American Legion Commander Carlos Woods said.

Post 229 needs support from individuals, church groups, Scout troops and ROTC squadrons from the Madison area to complete the flag task.

American Legion members and volunteers will meet at Madison Memory Gardens’ parking lot on Hughes Road at 9 a.m. on Nov. 7. Post members who have organized the project will conduct a short briefing. Works will be divided into three teams for placing flags at each cemetery.

Flags will be placed at Madison Memory Gardens (formerly known as Royal Cemetery) on Hughes Road just north of Madison City Hall; Faith Memorial Park, a private cemetery on Madison Boulevard just east of Hughes Road; and Old Madison Cemetery on Mill Road, south of Madison City Hall.

“The placing of flags is the start of our annual work to honor our veterans,” Woods said.

In addition, American Legion post members and volunteers will place wreaths on graves of veterans on Dec. 5. The wreaths will remain in place throughout the holidays and will be picked up in January, Woods said.

To volunteer, call Woods at 256-508-6548 or email to carloswoods@knology.net.

American Legion Post 229 has monthly meetings on second Thursdays at 7 p.m. at Madison Senior Center. For general information, call 256-258-8534, email to Admin@AmericanLegionPost229.org or visit americanlegionpost229.org.
