MADISON — Two second-place finishes in the first two weeks of the high school indoor track season has given the James Clemens coach an idea — the Jets girls can finish first when it matters most.

“I think we can win (the state championship) this year,’’ said Drew Bell, coach of the Class 7A program. “We think we can score two girls in every event. I don’t know of that’s ever been done at state, but that’s what we’re going to try to do. We think we’re strong in every event’’

James Clemens placed second among 7A schools and third overall behind Hoover among 82 schools at the Magic City Invitational.

The Jets boys placed 10th.

James Clemens athletes set five school records and won five medals. According to Bell, 16 Jets had strong performances.

Winning medals and setting school records were Dekonte Gistarb (60-meter hurdles in time of 9.29); Aaron Beane (1,600. 4:42.89); 4X200 girls 1:47.42 (Uriah James, Zada Campbell, Vada Samuels, Kayla Williams); 4X800 girls 10:14.12 (Elise Sheldrick, Audriana Blakely, Rachel Seeley, Liz Holcomb; and 4X800 boys 8:26.32 (Korey Shively, Andrew Patrick, Aaron Beane, Jase Bell).

Other medal winners for James Clemens included Jennifer Reis (second, pole vault), Kennedy Reese (second, shot put), Williams (second, 60 meters), Zuri Falkner (third, shot put), Williams (long jump).

The Jets had 18 athletes placing third or fourth.
