MADISON – Deadline for applications for a Madison Beautification Award will be May 7.
Madison Beautification and Tree Board sponsors the annual awards and has revised guidelines for judging in 2016.
“While much of the judging criteria is unchanged from previous years, the new judging standards place a greater emphasis on the use of seasonal color in the landscape,” awards chairperson Amber Braman said. Braman serves as vice president of the beautification board.
“Bold use of color creates a focal point in a landscape and boosts the visual interest of the space, while also attracting beneficial pollinators and wildlife,” Braman said.
Owners can integrate more color by planting an attractive mix of annuals that integrate well with the property’s entrance. “Bold colors in the landscape can also take form by the creative use of perennials, grasses and shrubs with unique leaf colors that span a landscape designer’s color wheel,” Braman said.
Because of the changes, property owners should review the revised judging criteria for 2016 available at the board’s website, keepmadisonbeautiful.org, spokesperson Meredith Kilby said.
“Pruned shrubs, mulched beds and an edged and a healthy lawn are still essential criteria for a commercial property. However, what will qualify properties for beautification awards will be the how color, texture and visual elements create a landscape scene ‘as a whole’ that is not only well maintained but also eye-catching and distinctive,” Braman said.
Application fee is $25. Applicants can pay online or by check. All applications and fees must be postmarked by May 7 for judging eligibility. To pay by check, mail to Madison Beautification & Tree Board, 100 Hughes Road, Madison, AL 35758.
Award winners will be honored at a beautification award luncheon in June.
