Volunteering gives Flynn inside look at schools

MADISON – Melanie Flynn discovered the hidden secret about volunteering:  giving time to others actually enriches your own life.
When husband Tim accepted a job in Huntsville, the family moved to Madison for the outstanding schools. “After six years here, the schools are still the biggest reason we stay. Teachers, staff, school board, superintendent, PTA … all care about the students, not only about grades but also the environment they create for students to learn in,” Melanie said.
“Madison and the schools are very diverse, allowing my children to grow up in a very practical way and learn to respect all people regardless of their color, race, cultural background or special needs,” she said.
Madison’s proximity to valuable experiences like Space Camp and Camp McDowell is a plus. “Strength of the faith, diversity of people, opportunities for our kids and family, friendliness of people and small businesses to shop at — but close to larger city opportunities — keep us here,” Melanie said.
Tim and Melanie have two children, Sean and Tara. Melanie grew up in northwestern Pennsylvania. She earned a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering at Pennsylvania State University.
Melanie’s volunteering has enmeshed her schedule with her children’s education. She has become acquainted with students, teachers and staff.
Melanie has served as room parent and committee chair/board member for Mill Creek Elementary School PTA for six years. For two years, she has been PTA President. “Being involved in our school (allows) me to give back to the school that gives so much to my kids,” Melanie said.
In addition, she volunteers at Asbury United Methodist Church. “I wasn’t sure where I would fit in. Asbury is much bigger than our small Vermont church. Thankfully, I met Julie Durling, Director of Children’s Ministry, and have been volunteering ever since.”
Melanie has helped with Asbury’s Vacation Bible School and children’s programs on Wednesdays and Sundays. She also is a substitute teacher with Madison City Schools.
The Flynns won two rescue dogs, Abby and Bella.
Her tastes in music vary but she listens primarily to contemporary Christian. Her favorite songs are “Greater,” Mercy Me; “The River,” Jordan Feliz, “Priceless,” For King and Country; and “Breathe,” Jonny Diaz.
Melanie appreciates Madison’s diverse restaurants, especially Main Street Cafe, Golden China, Uncle Maddio’s, Mia’s Cafe, La Placita and Saffron.
