Bob Jones basketball wraps summer practice with play day

MADISON-  Bob Jones wrapped up three weeks of competition on June 23 by hosting three teams for their final play date of allowed summer competition. Westminster Christian, Florence, and Muscle Shoals came to the gym at Bob Jones and all teams played a half against each other.

“We’ve been to Birmingham twice, to Ramsey and Hoover, said Bob Jones Head Basketball coach Luther Tiggs. “I like playing the Birmingham teams because they press a lot and play fast more than teams up here.”

Assistant coaches stood under the baskets and called fouls.

Tiggs had about 36 players participating in summer competitions.

Returning players Demontrez Brown, Chase Fiddler, and Trey Graham got a lot of playing time. Fiddler has offers from UAH and Campbell.

Tiggs said that he knows what those players can do.

He uses the summer to mainly get looks at the younger players coming up.

“We want to evaluate the upcoming group from last year’s junior varsity plus we have added a couple of guys from the school who wanted to get on a team. I want kids to have the opportunity to play their way onto a team. We practiced two days a week, had a playdate, and gave them a day off. It’s been pretty laid back.”

Jaydon Hill also played but took some football camp visits and did Brown. Both the varsity and JV went to camps at UAH.

He plans to give the players the rest of the summer off.

“I don’t want to see them until school starts.

I’m glad we have the time to practice. I know what they (the AHSAA) are trying to accomplish. They want the high school coach to have access to the kids rather than outside entities. It’s just enough time. We’re happy with where we are. I like the direction the program is going. I’m looking forward to the upcoming year. The kids know what a Bob Jones practice looks lik
