Sparkman comes in undefeated to face Bob Jones

HARVEST- For the second year in a row Sparkman comes in to their week 4 game with Bob Jones undefeated. Last year Bob Jones won 48-20.

Sparkman defeated Athens 48-11 using defense. They intercepted three passes and ran one back for a touchdown. The Senators defeated Buckhorn 36-10 using a strong offense led by quarterback Devin Kimbrough who completed 12 of 20 passes for 211 yards and running back Hunter Gibson who ran nine times for 123 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Kimbrough is living up to preseason billing new coach Laron White said.

“Devin has been playing great. He’s not in a situation where he’s got to make all the plays. He’s controlling the offense. Most of his throws are right on the money. He’s been a great leader and that is what your want your quarterback to be.”

White has brought a pro-style offense utilizing play-action and it has been tough for opposing defenses to get a read on.

“We run the ball and do a little old fashion play action. We stretch the field on most of our throws.  If the run game is going it gets the receivers open more. Now you got to bring a safety up in the box and that’s when you can make big plays. Alabama ran play action the last few years. Most of your pro style college teams run play action. It doesn’t have to be deep it can be curl flat.”

Sparkman is deep at receiver with 5 in the rotation. Rondell Cole at wide receiver and Parker Swords at tight end lead the way.

Sparkman has not beat Bob Jones since 2006, 10 losses in a row.

“It’s a big game,” White said. “The kids understand they have an opportunity to do something that hasn’t been done in a long time. You got to do everything you’ve been taught in practice. You got to believe in yourself and go wide open.  We are going to give it a great shot. We won’t be scared of them.”

Kickoff is Friday night at 7:00 pm at Madison City Schools Stadium.
