Discovery, Liberty still undefeated, big game looms

MADISON-  Mark October 5 on your calendar. It will be one of the biggest football games Madison has seen, topped only by the Bob Jones-James Clemens games.

That night at 5 pm Liberty will host Discovery at Madison City Schools Stadium. Both schools cheer and dance teams and bands will also perform to show the community all the hard work they have put in to make games exciting.

Both eighth grade teams are currently undefeated with games to play this week.

Discovery seventh grade team lost to Monrovia 22-18 but posted wins over Meridianville and Buckhorn.

“We got some kids on seventh-grade team that could play at the eighth-grade level but we want to keep the group of kids together and develop that chemistry,” said Discovery head coach Cedric Jackson.

Rayshawn Hardy and Ezekial Smith lead the seventh-grade team offense by passing and running the ball. Cameron White is a big-play receiver. Rowan Jones, Caleb Holsey, Jacob Williams, and Maddux Sunderman lead the Panther defense.

The Discovery eighth grade team blasted Monrovia 43-6 to stay undefeated.

Leaders on the eighth-grade team include quarterbacks Adam Benefield and Keenan Hill. Terrence Salter and Cozey Scarborough play running back and receiver. The offensive line is led by Collin Jones, Anthony Ramos, Austin Barnes, Jaden Edwards, and Devin Mays.

Cedric Jackson, the coach’s son, plays fullback on offense and tackle on defense. He has been practically unstoppable the last two weeks.

“I’m real excited about this team. We play aggressive assignment football. If we play together and cut out penalties it is going to be hard to beat us. I’m happy with both teams. I got to spend the entire off-season with them and it is showing,” Jackson said.

All the teams missed practically an entire week of practice due to school being cancelled for two days the week of Sept. 12. And scheduled games on Aug. 31 was missed due to weather. Those will not be made up.

Last year Liberty scored a 16-6 win in the seventh-grade game and Discovery won the eighth grade game 22-20 after trailing 14-0.
