“The Mike” At Madison Academy Now Named In Honor Of Longtime Coach

MADISON- Returning to the baseball field he helped build, Mike Good was greeted with the fact the facility on the grounds of the campus of Madison Academy High has been named in his honor. The 14-year head baseball coach for the Mustangs and some of his family were invited to a special ceremony where the Mustangs’ home baseball field was dedicated The Mike Good Field.

“I am very flattered knowing how long I spent at Madison Academy,” said Good of his honor. “I remember when the school moved to its current location and had to build the athletic facilities how I was given the responsibilities of the entire baseball and softball complex. I had to oversee the contractors and the volunteers. It’s great to see many of those same people remained connected to the school. It’s an honor to be recognized that I was a big help to each of them and the school.”

Good spent 24 years coaching baseball at the school, 14 of those as head coach where he amassed a record of 406-205, four state championships including three consecutive state titles from 2014-2016 and state runner-up twice. Good retired as head coach after the 2016 season.

During his tenure as head coach, the Mustangs’ program was billed as among the 100 best high school programs in the country. Besides winning just about every coaching award possible, Good was also inducted into the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017. He currently is an assistant baseball coach at Sparkman High for the second consecutive season. He works fulltime for Decibel Research Inc. as a senior systems engineer.

Upon his honor, Good said, “I’m extremely humbled by this honor and coaching at Madison Academy was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Throughout my tenure at Madison Academy I had the wonderful support of my employers who helped give me the opportunity to work with my community. At times, I had to educate myself with the game. I attended clinics and learned from other coaches.”

Over time under Good’s leadership, Madison Academy raised its competition level that other programs wanted to be like and others wanted to be a part of. “That’s one of the best feelings of this honor,” added Good.

On top of the field’s scoreboard is the new heading of The Mike Good Field. Those close to the baseball program call the field “The Mike” as the baseball field is part of the Jeff Stinnett Athletic Complex.
