First Baptist treats MCS bus drivers

MADISON – Bus drivers who transport Madison’s children to and from school campuses are among the most important employees in the district, according to Superintendent Robert Parker.

In fact, Parker said their role is more valuable than his, because they interact directly with students each day and thus impact the schools daily.

Parker spoke during an appreciation breakfast for Madison City Schools’ transportation employees. Members of First Baptist Church of Madison at 4257 Sullivan St. treated the drivers to scrambled eggs, bacon, biscuits, French toast, oats and other savory foods.

Parker and Assistant Superintendent Eric Terrell attended the event to show their gratitude to the drivers, along with saying thanks to First Baptist members for recognizing these employees.

Each school day, the Madison district transports approximately 5,000 students. “Ridership is growing each year,” MCS Public Relations Manager John Peck said.

This school year, school officials will add six new drivers and routes to meet demand. The growth also means more work for mechanics to service the additional buses, which are housed on MCS Transportation Department’s property at 217 Westchester Road in Madison.

MCS Transportation Department frequently needs to hire substitute bus drivers and bus aides. The department looks for conscientious and safe drivers and aides who care about children.

An applicant is not required to have previous experience in driving a school bus. The transportation staff will provide training for the CDL driving test and state certification. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, a good driving record and be able to pass a drug screening.

Both positions require a background check. For more information, call 256-774-4613.

The department staff includes Roosevelt Carter Jr., Transportation Specialist; Deborah Leeth, Office Manager; Traci Reinhardt, Route Specialist; and Shannon Pease, Shop Foreman.
