Work on Greenbrier interchange project to begin this week

HUNTSVILLE — The Alabama Department of Transportation announced that Reed Contracting will begin work this week on the project to improve the Interstate 565 interchange at Exit 3 (Greenbrier Road) in Limestone County.

The $10,264,000 project, anticipated to continue into late 2019 or early 2020, will reconfigure the eastbound ramps to and from Greenbrier Road, improving safety as well as traffic flow to and from a rapidly-developing industrial area.

The contractor will begin by resurfacing Alabama 20, the service road north of I-565 between Mooresville Road and Greenbrier Road, starting the night of Sunday, Oct. 28, if weather permits.

This will be followed by paving of the inside shoulder of I-565 eastbound in preparation for traffic to be shifted from the outside lane. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in both directions. Once traffic is shifted, the eastbound off ramp to Greenbrier Road will be closed, and traffic traveling eastbound to Greenbrier Road will be detoured at Exit 2 (Mooresville Road) to Alabama 20 (north service road) to Greenbrier Road.

Three ramps will be constructed under this project: Ramp A — I-565 eastbound to Greenbrier Road southbound; Ramp B — I-565 eastbound to Greenbrier Road northbound; Ramp C — Greenbrier Road northbound and southbound to I-565 eastbound.

Ramps A and B diverge from a single slip road. Ramp A generally follows the footprint of the existing off ramp. Ramp B continues alongside I-565 eastbound, beside a mechanically-stabilized earth wall, under the Greenbrier Road overpass, and then loops to Greenbrier Road northbound.

Work will be performed from 6 p.m. – 6 a.m. each night, Sunday through Thursday, to reduce impacts on traffic. ALDOT said they anticipate minimal effects on I-565 traffic flow, but drivers using Greenbrier Road, the service roads and interchange ramps should prepare for delays and detours over the course of the project.
